The Wheelchair Project

This is a project done as part of an assignment for my postgraduate studies. It was created inspired by the material found in the "Disabled-Access Friendly" website, whose aim is to use English Language Teaching to raise awareness around issues which affect people with mobility disability. It is intended for B2 level students, according to the CEFR. Feel free to share and...enjoy it!

Activity 1:
You are going to watch the video “the Wheelchair”.
Listen carefully and try to write down the lines of the two men.
After you finish, put the lines together and post the dialogue in the comments section below, remembering to write the number of the activity at the beginning of your comment.

Activity 2:
In the previous video, Luke’s behaviour towards David was inappropriate. Can you write down guidelines for proper behaviour, based on Luke’s attitude towards David.
e.g.: Do not use child language when talking to a person with mobility disability. Post your answers in the comments section below, starting with the words "Activity 2".

Activity 3:
Visit the following page http://www.sagetraveling.com/london-disabled-access and read the text. Then, visit this page http://www.sagetraveling.com/Athens-Disabled-Access and read the text again. After you have finished, comment on the possible difficulties a disabled person might encounter in each city.

HOMEWORK:
Your task is to research our city and find out how accessible Pyrgos is for wheelchair users. You have to visit places of tourist interest such as hotels, museums, cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops, as well as services like public restrooms, banks, hospitals, travel agencies and post offices and investigate their facilities. Do not forget to include means of public transport.
Use the “facilities checklist” handout (which you can download from here:) to evaluate the facilities and write down your findings.

When you have finished with your investigation, you should write a report with all your findings. These reports will later be used to compose a leaflet with information necessary for tourists getting around Pyrgos in a wheelchair.
Write your report in the comments section below, starting with the word "Report".

Lesson created and shared by "The Writing Factor", 2014.
